What To Do If Your Roof Gets Damaged By Storms Or Winds?

Often, weather can be unpredictable, especially in certain regions of the United States Of America. Therefore, you should regularly check the weather forecasts to prepare yourself for the future. However, storm damage can significantly affect your property. In such cases, you might be confused about what to do.

Below, we have listed the steps you should follow if your roof gets damaged by storms or winds.

1. Assess the damage- First and foremost, assess the damage done to your roof. It will help you further discuss your needs with the roofing company and insurance provider. Make sure you do not look for damaged areas with naked eyes; instead, use a pair of binoculars.

Note down the square foot area and all the specific details of the damaged area. You should also carefully look for missing shingles. Look for signs of exposed tarpaper, plywood, or ends of missing shingles. Additionally, note the color and shade of the material.

2. Make temporary fixes to minimize the damage- If your roof is severely damaged directly above your living space, it can also damage your interior property. Therefore, remove all valuables below the damaged area and place a bucket or garbage can to collect water in case of leaks.

And if there is severe roof damage, you may have to quickly waterproof the roof using strapped tarping.

3. Contact your insurance company- Evaluate the damage and determine if it is large enough to fall under your home insurance. You should also figure out if hiring a contractor directly for repairs would be better and more economical.

Remember, if a storm hits your local area, ‌avail your homeowner's insurance policy quickly as contractors may soon become busy.

4. Contact a reliable contractor- If you wish to hire a roofing contractor, look for a professional certified contractor. However, avoid hiring traveling contractors who are in your area after the storms. They often move to some other city after doing the job and aren’t answerable to you afterward. Therefore, they may not offer high-quality services.
