Hail Damage & Insurance Claims in St. Louis County

The storm only lasted 15 minutes.

The headache can last for months.

If you live in Creve Coeur or anywhere in St. Louis County, you know the sound: the deafening clatter of hail hitting your roof.

Once the sky clears, the real work begins. You have to deal with your insurance company.

For many homeowners, this is intimidating. Will my rates go up? What if they deny the claim? Who can I trust?

At Prrotect Roofing, we aren’t just roofers; we are homeowner advocates. We understand the specific insurance landscape of Missouri. We work with carriers like State Farm, Allstate, and American Family every day.

Here is your step-by-step guide to getting your home restored fairly.

Step 1: Confirm You Actually Have Damage

Just because you saw hail on your driveway doesn’t mean your roof is totaled.

The “Bruise” Test:

Hail damage isn’t always visible from the ground. Large hail (golf ball size or larger) bruises the shingle mat. It knocks the granules loose and fractures the fiberglass underneath.

  • Immediate Risk: None. Your roof won’t leak today.
  • Long-Term Risk: UV rays will eat through that bruise in 1-2 years, causing leaks.

Do NOT Call Your Insurance Agent Yet.

Call a local professional first.

If you file a claim and the adjuster finds no damage, that “zero payout” claim still goes on your permanent record (CLUE report). Too many of those can raise your rates.

The Prrotect Solution:

We offer a Residential Storm Restoration assessment. We will hop on the roof, draw a “test square” (10′ x 10′), and count the hits. If we find enough damage (usually 8-10 hits per square), then we advise you to file.

Step 2: The Statute of Limitations Clock

In Missouri, you do not have forever to file a claim.

While the state statute of limitations for property damage is technically 5 years, most insurance policies shorten this window to 1 year or 2 years from the “Date of Loss.”

If a storm hit Creve Coeur on April 15, 2025, and you wait until May 2026 to file, your carrier might deny you simply for being late.

Pro Tip: Do you remember the exact date of the storm? We do. We subscribe to meteorological data services (like CoreLogic) that verify exact hail swath dates for every address in 63141. We provide this proof to your insurance company.

Step 3: The Adjuster Meeting (Crucial Step)

After you file, the insurance company sends an adjuster to your home.

You should never let the adjuster go up on the roof alone.

The adjuster works for the insurance company. Their job is to limit the company’s liability. Sometimes, they are independent contractors who are tired, overworked, and miss things.

We Meet Them There.

As your Creve Coeur roofing contractor, we ask to be present during the adjustment.

  • We walk the roof with them.
  • We circle the damage with chalk.
  • We advocate for you: “Look at this soft metal damage on the vents. Look at the bruising on the north slope.”

When a contractor is present, the approval rate for legitimate claims goes up significantly.

Step 4: Understanding ACV vs RCV

When you get your check, it will likely be smaller than you expected. Don’t panic. This is how modern policies work.

ACV (Actual Cash Value):

This is the value of your roof today. If your roof is 15 years old, it isn’t worth much. The insurance company deducts “depreciation” (age and wear) from the total.

  • The First Check: This is usually just the ACV payment. It allows work to start.

RCV (Replacement Cost Value):

This is what it actually costs to build a new roof in 2026 prices.

  • The Second Check: Once the work is done and we send them a Certificate of Completion, they release the “Recoverable Depreciation.” This second check covers the rest of the bill.

Step 5: The Free Roof Scam (Legal Warning)

You might have a neighbor who says, “My roofer waived my deductible! I got a free roof!”

Be very careful.

In Missouri, under Senate Bill 106 (and similar consumer protection laws), it is illegal for a contractor to pay, rebate, or waive your insurance deductible.

If a roofer offers to “eat your deductible,” they are committing insurance fraud. They are usually doing this by:

  1. Inflating the invoice sent to the insurance company (Fraud).
  2. Using cheap, sub-standard materials on your home to make up the lost profit.

The Prrotect Promise:

We play by the rules. We protect you from liability. You pay your deductible (as required by your contract), and we ensure the insurance company pays for everything else—including code upgrades like ice shields and ridge vents.

Don’t Face the Giants Alone

Insurance companies have teams of lawyers and adjusters. You should have a team, too.

Whether it is a small wind repair or a total hail replacement, Prrotect Roofing handles the documentation, the photos, and the negotiations.
